BRIEF INFORMATION. Pattaya is one of the important cities in Thailand. It is located about 165 km southeast of the capital Bangkok and on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand. Although the city is administratively part of the province of Chonburi, it has the status of a special municipality with self-government. It literally means "Munson's southwesterly wind".

Pattaya is named after King Phraya Taka of Siam, later known as King Taksin the Great. At the end of the 18th century (1767) when the old kingdom of Ayutthaya was attacked by the Burmese, Phraya Tak (King Taksin) made a very good war in the region and after that the name of the region remained as Pattaya.

Pattaya remained a small fishing village until the late 1950s. In 1964 it became a municipality. It began to grow when American soldiers who participated in the Vietnam War began to use Pattaya as a vacation spot. In 1978 it became a city.

The number of high-rise buildings in the city has increased as a result of demand from foreigners living and working in the city, mainly from Western Europe and North America. Thus, the city ranked second in terms of the number of high-rise buildings after the capital of the country, Bangkok.
